Assange Welcomes U.N. Ruling
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, claimed a ‘significant victory’ after a United Nations panel ruled that he had been detained arbitrarily and should be compensated.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) JULIAN ASSANGE, WIKILEAKS FOUNDER, SAYING: (MEDIA BRIEFING ENDS)“I would like to say thank you. I miss my family. We have today a really significant victory that has brought a smile to my face and I hope many others as well. Thanks.”1. SOUNDBITE: (English) Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder:“There has been a final decision. There is no ability to appeal the decision of the United Nations. The lawfulness of my detention, or otherwise, is now a matter of settled law. The United Kingdom and Sweden had their opportunity to appeal. The last two weeks they have had that opportunity. They did not lodged an appeal. They cannot now seek to object the findings of a process which they themselves were involved in for 16 months, a jurisdiction which they submitted to, recognised and in part founded together with their early involvement in the United Nations.”GENEVA, SWITZERLAND (FEBRUARY 5, 2016) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL). (SOUNDBITE) (English) SECRETARY OF THE U.N. WORKING GROUP ON ARBITRARY DETENTION, CHRISTOPHE PESCHOUX, SAYING:“You know that the weakness of international law is that there is no enforcement mechanism, so implementation of decisions rests on the good faith, commitments of states to honour their obligation under the treaties they have ratified. Now in this particular case there may be a new court case or a new court action initiated by Mr. Assange and his lawyers and in this context in the UK or elsewhere there may be the possibility of an enforceable right to compensation.”
