New U.N. Secretary General is Appointed
António Guterres has been appointed as the next Secretary General of the United Nations. Mr. Guterres, formerly the prime minister of Portugal and the head of the U.N.'s refugee agency, will begin his term in January.
SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General Designate:“When I heard the Security Council’s decision to recommend me to the General Assembly, my feelings could be described by just two words: gratitude and humility - and it is with the same gratitude and humility that I stand before you today now joined by a profound sense of responsibility.”(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL DESIGNEE, ANTONIO GUTERRES, SAYING:“I feel a deep solidarity in relation to the Syrian people. I was high commissioner for refugees when the Syrians have opened their borders, the doors of the houses and their hearts to millions of refugees coming from Iraq, not to mention the Palestinian refugees that enjoyed in Syria always the highest level of rights in the region. And to see the Syrian people suffering so much, it’s something that absolutely breaks my heart.”(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL DESIGNEE, ANTONIO GUTERRES, SAYING:“So what I can say is that I do my best to serve the cause of peace for the Syrian people. But now there is the secretary-general of the United Nations working for it. And I also witness the fact that the countries that are key stakeholders in this process will be meeting again to try to move ahead with the peace process. I can only wish that they will be successful because it is a moral obligation of us all to stop the suffering of the Syrian people.”
