A Minnesota State Senate candidate who was in labor during her convention speech — and was passed over for her party’s endorsement — won her primary on Tuesday night. Erin Maye Quade was the choice of Democratic-Farmer-Labor voters by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

It is early, with just 24 percent of the vote in, but the Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is trailing his Trump-endorsed challenger, Adam Steen. Steen campaigned on a platform of overturning the 2020 election result and said he would seek to make contraception illegal in the state.

Still plenty of results left to come in, but Representative Ilhan Omar’s primary race appears quite competitive with just over 40 percent of the vote in.

The field is set for the Connecticut secretary of state race: Stephanie Thomas, a Democratic state representative, will face Dominic Rapini, the Republican former chairman of a group that has promoted claims of voter fraud.

Sparse public polling has suggested that the Minnesota governor’s race could be quite competitive. Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, is making abortion rights a central piece of his argument against Scott Jensen, his likely Republican opponent.

In Wisconsin’s Republican primaries, the candidate who does best in the vote-rich counties that surround Milwaukee usually wins. But former President Donald J. Trump’s strength in the state’s rural corners will test that theory.

The special election in Minnesota’s First District will offer a snapshot — if a highly imperfect snapshot — of political energy in both parties and whether either side is overperforming, less than three months before the midterm elections.

In Vermont, voting by mail is up over previous midterms, with a total of 59,791 ballots requested, according to the chief of staff for Vermont’s secretary of state. By Monday’s end, 46,240 ballots had been returned.
