5 Young People Are Killed in Car Crash in Westchester County

A 9-year-old boy was the sole survivor after a teenage driver veered off the road. The victims ranged in age from 8 to 17, the police said.

A fiery crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway took the lives of five young people in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to the Westchester County police.

A sixth child, a 9-year-old boy who was riding in the rear hatchback area of the Nissan Rogue that crashed, survived and was taken to Westchester Medical Center. The boy’s injuries are not life-threatening, the police said.

The five dead children, four male and one female, ranged in age from 8 to 17. The driver was 16, the police said.

It appeared that they were all from one family, according to Matt Conway, the superintendent of the public school system in Derby, Conn., where the police said the children lived.

The family had recently moved from New York to Derby, a former manufacturing town 10 miles west of New Haven that is described as “Connecticut’s smallest city,” and Mr. Conway said they had yet to enroll in Derby schools.

He said he had spoken to the father of the children on Sunday.

“They’re dealing with just as unimaginable a tragedy as you could ever think of, to have to bury five of your children all at once,” Mr. Conway said.

The crash occurred as the car was heading northbound on the Hutchinson River Parkway, between Mamaroneck Road and Mamaroneck Avenue near the Scarsdale-White Plains border. The vehicle veered off the road for unknown reasons and crashed into a tree, where it caught fire, police said.

While trucks sometimes crash into a low bridge that crosses the Hutchinson River Parkway at Mamaroneck Road, the site of Sunday’s crash was not a known trouble spot for accidents, the police said.

But a local news investigation in 2015 that used state data obtained via the Freedom of Information Law detailed New York’s most dangerous stretches of roadway. The Hutchinson River Parkway, near Mamaroneck Avenue, made the list.

The Westchester County police department is expected to update the media on the crash on Monday.
